Kirsty Mitchell’s mother died of cancer in 2008. For five years, the artist looked for ways to give expression to her sorrow, as a homage to her mother and to escape the painful reality, by making use of comforting childhood memories. Applying her talent as a trained fashion and costume designer, the Wonderland series is made up of dream-like creations of magical worlds set in the forest of England, the artist’s homeland.

The Fotografiska exhibition brings together for the first time the 74 motifs from the series, which first appeared in 2016 as a book of the same title, Wonderland. Taken all together, the photographs give rise to a colourful kaleidoscope where magic and reality meet.

Born in England in 1976, Kirsty Mitchell studied History of Art before training in Fashion and Costume Design. Her Wonderland series triggered her breakthrough as a photographer. Since then, her work has been published in Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue Italia, The Guardian and The Telegraph, among others. In September 2015, Wonderland became the most successful photo book in the history of the crowd-funding website, Kickstarter. The book reached its financing goal within 24 hours and collected a total of £334,000. The limited edition of the Wonderland book received the 2016 International Photography Award in the Professional Fine Art Book category.
